AU SOE Land Acknowledgement Statement

DC at night

The School of Education wants to acknowledge that Washington DC is the traditional territory of Nacotchtank/Anacostan/Piscataway people. At American University’s School of Education, we acknowledge this legacy and find inspiration from this land. .

Territory or land acknowledgement is our way of recognizing Indigenous presence in our everyday life as a School. We, SOE faculty, staff, and students, have a responsibility to consider what it means to acknowledge the history and legacy of colonialism in our history as a nation, as a community, and as a School of Education. Throughout our programs’ curricula we note the privileges we enjoy today because of colonialism and we strive to not perpetuate colonial futurity.
